In our Nation we have adopted a method to elect our president and vice president by Electoral Collage. 535 to match the members of the house of Representatives and three for DC.
In most States (all but two) these electors should cast their vote to reflect the popular vote of their states how ever these electors are not pledged to abide by this. but the poplar vote carries the day usually.
Maine and Nebraska are the two states where these Electors follow the vote by district not popular vote, also are not pledged to abide by the local vote....
At this point in our history this is the closest we come to Election by popular vote
Several times in our past an effort has been made to enact a bill for direct vetoing only to be kicked further down the road.
We have never been a nation of one ethnic group or religion and to avoid wars, overcome our own prejudice, and need to compete was and is still to accept all religions and endorse none..
